Annie’s Arrival
Monday, 2 October 2006 by GREG
We all knew it was simply a matter of time until four furry legs would be running around my parent’s house in Northern Virginia again. The right time recently arrived and after a lot of looking and searching online, Mom and Dad decided to adopt a 4-year old female Labrador mix. Annie is her name and she is the latest in a long, proud line of Anderson canines.
Pretty amazing what you can do with a few clicks of the mouse. Although certainly not the latest service to find its way online, pet adoption through the internet seems to be the best way to find a new companion these days. A lot of shelters and rescues advertise their pets online, which is in fact how Suzi and I located our own little misfit, Olivia. My parents had a great experience with Petfinder.com and made contact with a woman in Arkansas who makes road trips through the Northeast to pick up strays. Apparently, there is an abundance in that area. She brings them home, nurses them back to health and looks for the perfect home by posting on Petfinder.com. She then hits the road with dogs in tow to be delivered to their “forever home,” as some pet shelters like to call it. Annie has certainly found hers and as we all know, she couldn’t be more fortunate.
She arrived mid-August and really took her time getting acclimated to the 3-story Colonial. She would only move between 1 or 2 rooms for a while but Mom says that Annie is now comfortable with the entire house and is a constant companion throughout the day. Suzi and I have yet to meet her but Matt, Jenn and Eric have reported that she’s a keeper. I’ve posted a few pictures in the photo gallery that you can view here. The consensus is that she has a little St. Bernard in her, which would explain her size and long legs. And maybe those eyelashes!

Greg,
Thanks for sharing pics of our new doggie with everyone. We really love having her – and love those blonde eyelashes. She’s now familiar with all the rooms in the house, though it took a few weeks for that to happen. The first few days we had her we actually had to put a leash on her to get her to move from room-to-room. At bedtime, she would sit on the corner of the family room rug and lean waaaaay over to look down the hallway. Less than 15 feet away, Mom and I were doing all we could to coax her into the bedroom. She absolutely would not walk those 15 feet……….until I put the leash on her and she gladly followed me down the hall! It was a little odd walking around the house with her on a leash, but it worked, so that’s what we did until she was comfortable enough on her own to leave the safety of that family room rug.
